The founders:

As early as 1841 the Manchester & Sheffield Railway (where Peacock was the No. 1 engine man) ordered locomotives from Sharp Roberts (where Beyer was the Chief Engineer) and regularly purchased Sharp locomotives thereafter. This may be how Peacock first met Beyer, and it is possible that they collaborated in 1844-1846, when six particularly succesful 0-6-0 "luggage" engines were built, including "Sphynx":

These Beyer, Peacock photographs are probably the oldest collection of industrial pictures in the world, intended as a commercial record and a sales adjunct. The earliest photographs taken at Gorton Foundry were by James Mudd; he took them using an early wet plate process on a glass plate slightly smaller than the 15in x 12in in size on each he standardised later.
From then on a maker's photograph was taken of most types. Beyer, who has experimented earlier with the Daguerreotype process, was quick to realise the potential of Fox Talbot's negative and positive process.
